The New School Leader #01

The New School Leader Newsletter

Whatever it takes.

That’s what leaders do. Well, that’s what GOOD leaders do.

Whatever it takes to make a difference.

It is an exhausting response, but it is the right response. Especially, when it comes to making a difference for teachers and students.

To be able to do whatever it takes for your teachers and students in the fall, you are going to have to do whatever it takes to fill your own cup this summer.

What are you going to be reading? Where are you going to be traveling? What relationships are you going to lean into now that you have a little bit of time?

Do whatever it takes.

The Good Stuff

1. The Road to The Principalship

“I have observed too many assistant principals who try to build their resume in a weekend, rather than during the time they are serving as an assistant principal.” Dr. Steven Weber explains the 5 behaviors and demonstrated leadership skills that need to be developed on your road to the principalship.

2. 7 Things New Assistant Principals Should Do In Their New Role

If you’ve recently been hired to become an assistant principal in the fall, you probably have a lot of questions about what that will look like. Here are 7 things you can do in your new role that will make it a much better transition for you.

3. Do You Have These Skills?

“Lots of skills contribute to great leadership, but it’s a leader’s human factors that build great connection, foster trust and respect, and at the end of the day get things done.” – Lolly Daskal

What is The Team Reading?

Brett is reading Work Rules! by Laszlo Bock

I am reading Work Rules! by Laszlo Bock. It’s written by the head of Google’s “People Operations Team” about his experience in helping the company attract and retain some of the most creative minds in the country at Google. From the roles of management, to hiring practices, to how to treat employees, Bock provides the blueprint of how Google has changed the game when it comes to workplace value.

Kelsey is reading Radical Candor by Kim Scott

Recently in my job, I have had to step up and have some “radical” conversations with colleagues. However, I was ill-equipped with how to have those conversations professionally. (They just don’t teach you that in school!) So I’ve decided to give Radical Candor by Kim Scott a try. So far Scott has laid the foundation of “caring personally” and “challenging directly”. I look forward to getting deeper into the weeds on these two topics.

Lute is reading Atlas of the Heart by Brené Brown

I just started reading “Atlas of the Heart” a couple of days ago, and I am super excited about it. “Dare to Lead” was one of my favorite reads the year it was released, so when Brené Brown wrote this one, I knew I had to read it. I’ve had it sitting on my shelf for a few months, and now that summer is here and the bulk of my dissertation research is finished, I should finally have some time to dig into it.

Meanwhile, on Twitter…
